Cold Weather Safety
Severe cold weather can be dangerous.
Here are some simple ways to safe and healthy in the cold.
- Wear warm layers.
- You can become dehydrated in cold weather too. Make sure you drink enough water.
- Keep your gas tank full. Fuel lines can ice over and you want to avoid running out of gas while out in cold weather.
- Stay home during storms. Stay off the roads during bad weather. Ice on the roads and low visibility are the perfect environment for accidents.
- Prepare for unexpected emergencies. Ensure you have plenty of water and foods that do not require heat.
- Keep an emergency kit in your car with first aid supplies, a blanket, flashlight, water, nuts or other snacks.
- Sprinkle cat litter on the ice patches on your sidewalk or stairs to prevent slips and falls.
- If you have pets, bring them inside.
- Install a CO (Carbon Monoxide) detector. Keep generators at least 20 ft away from your house. Keep grills, camp stoves, and generators out of the house. This includes basements and garages.
- Learn the symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.
- Check on elderly or chronically ill friends and family and neighbors.
